Streams and Watershed Program
The Big Walnut Watershed originates approximately 1 mile south of Mt. Gilead. The Big Walnut Creek flows through the communities of Marengo, Sunbury, New Albany, and joins the Scioto River after it flows into Pickaway County.

The Hoover Reservoir, a major water source for the City of Columbus, lies along the Big Walnut Creek. Constructed by the City of Columbus, the reservoir is named for two brothers, Charles and Clarence Hoover, who made great advancements in water and wastewater treatment during their career with the City of Columbus Waterworks. The Hoover Dam was dedicated in 1955, ten years after major water shortages prompted the project's development.

  • Drainage Area: 82,027 acres (128 square miles)
  • 185 miles of streams
  • Contains Hoover Reservoir (2406 acres) & Sunbury Reservoirs (15 acres)
