The Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District is now taking orders for the annual Tree & Wildlife Products Sale. To place an order, simply fill out the order form found in the newsletter, and return it, with payment to the SWCD office. There is a limited stock on all items, so orders will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Order early to avoid being closed out of items you desire. Seedlings, seeds and wildlife products will be available for pick up at our office April 6-9, 2010. The office will be open from 8:00-6:00 these days. The seedlings we offer are high quality, bare root nursery stock. With reasonable care, a fine planting can be developed. However, due to numerous handling conditions and planting variables beyond our control, the Delaware SWCD cannot be responsible for plants in your care or picked up after the assigned dates.
ABOUT OUR SEEDLINGS
Seedlings are young trees or shrubs that are planted from seed. They are grown 1-4 years in beds, and then dug. There is usually a variation in size because they are "bed-run" or include all trees that were growing in that bed at the time of digging. Most trees sold in our program are dug in the late Winter or early Spring depending on soil and digging conditions. If trees were dug from frozen soil, there would be no fine roots. Our trees usually arrive in early April, but because of varying weather conditions, it's possible that some may be delayed. If this ends up affecting your order, bear with us. We will do our best to get your trees to you as soon as weather allows.
For more information, and to view color pictures of trees we are offering for sale, please see the Ohio Division of Forestry's Ohio Trees Index. |

COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Geological Survey will conduct research that will help protect water resources and plan construction projects in the state’s fastest growing county. The ODNR Division of Geological Survey will collaborate with the Delaware County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Upper Scioto River Watershed Project to locate and map karst features throughout western Delaware County. Knowing where these geological formations exist will allow developers, landowners and officials to make sound decisions regarding construction, infrastructure and water resources. Karst topography in Ohio forms when surface water percolates down to the water table, slowly dissolving soluble limestone or dolomite and creating voids under the earth’s surface. In these areas, progressive underground erosion can lead to earthen collapses. Karst formations have high rates of permeability, reducing the opportunity for contaminant filtration, and they can also cause unusual flooding when water tables are high.

The US EPA just released a new guidebook that describes maintenance and inspection practices for existing wet ponds and wetlands. The guide includes checklists for use during construction and routine maintenance of ponds/wetlands, and also includes a home owner pond inspection checklist. Maintenance profile sheets describe how to address eight different common maintenance issues. The Pond/Wetland Management Guidebook is available at: http://www.epa.gov/npdes/pubs/pondmgmtguide.pdf |

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is currently holding continuous sign-up for the new Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) with a first cutoff for ranking scheduled for September 30, 2009. As part of the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, Congress renamed and revamped the former Conservation Security Program completely to improve its availability and appeal to agricultural and forestry producers. CSP is now being offered in all 50 states as well as other terrirtories with a maximum nationwide enrollment of nearly 12.8 million acres.
To apply for CSP, producers are encouraged to first use a self-screening checklist to determine if the new program is suitable for them or their operation. The checklist is available on www.oh.nrcs.usda.gov and at the NRCS office. After the self-screening, the producers' current and proposed conservation activities are entered in the conservation management tool (CMT). This tool estimates the level of environmental performance to be achieved by a producer implementing and maintaining conservation activities which will, in turn, be used to rank applications.

The Dick O'Keefe Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor the memory of Mr. O'Keefe who passed away on December 29, 1997. Contributions in his memory came from a host of friends and family, as they knew how much farming was a part of his life. Dick was born and reared in Delaware County, and introduced to farming at an early age, as was his father and grandfather before him. He understood all the perils associated with agriculture, but "the seed had been planted," making the term "farmer" something of which he was very proud. His concern that farming would become "extinct" because of multiple reasons was a priority to him. This scholarship is awarded to a Delaware County resident, or a graduate of a Delaware County public or private high school who is pursuing, or planning to pursue, a degree in agriculture.
Applications are available online at here as a fill-in pdf form, in high school guidance offices, and at the Delaware Soil and Water Conservation District office. Call the SWCD for more information at (740) 368-1921. Completed applications must be received by the SWCD office by Wednesday, April 15, 2010. |

Rural drainage systems are too often a forgotten and failing infrastructure. The situation leaves Ohio’s agricultural producers, rural residents and communities, as well as our economy and environment at risk. A Rural Drainage Report for Ohio was published in January 2008.
